RUSC Announces Derflinger as New Technical Director

RUSC is thrilled to announce the appointment of Richard (Rick) Derflinger as its new Technical Director. Derflinger brings a wealth of experience in youth soccer development, coaching, coach education, and program management. His career spans international coaching roles, leadership positions at youth clubs, and he brings a deep commitment to developing coaching staff and fostering a positive, enriching soccer experience for young athletes.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Rick to the Rockbridge United family,” reports Club Director Paul Gregory. “His extensive experience and passion for developing young players make him the perfect fit to lead our program into the future.”

Derflinger’s impressive background includes:

  • UEFA B License and USSF C License certifications.
  • BA in Cultural Anthropology from the College of William and Mary, member of the Athletics Hall of Fame.
  • Lead Soccer Coach, HiKicker Youth Football Club, Beijing, China; grass roots soccer development throughout Beijing, also provided coaching guidance to various schools in the Beijing Ministry of Education.
  • Technical Director, Warrenton VA Youth Sports Club (WYSC); oversaw a program of over 700 players and successfully increased player enrollment by 20%.
  • Over 15 years as President of World Class Soccer School; developed training programs for over 2,000 youth players and worked with numerous youth clubs and organizations.
  • 7 years as a United States Olympic Development Coach.
  • Experience as a Technical Director, Director of Training, and WAGS Rep/Girls Travel Director for various youth clubs.
  • Coach of 5 Virginia State High School Champions (Robinson and Woodson).
  • Involvement in developing programs such as Soccer Start and TOP Soccer for US Youth Soccer.

In his role as Technical Director, Derflinger will be responsible for:

  • Overseeing the club’s player development curriculum.
  • Providing coaching education and support.
  • Developing and implementing training programs for players of all ages and skill levels.
  • Fostering a positive and supportive club culture.
